I like to think of myself as a happy-go-lucky guy. As a Reformed believer, I don’t really subscribe to luck. But happy-go-providential guy sounds almost…creepy. So let’s just stick with happy.
I am:
- a family man. I married Brenda in 1990 at the tender age of 26 (feel free to do the math). Together, we have four children.
- a fool for Christ. No really. Sometimes I get kinda’ goofy when I talk and/or think about Jesus. At times, He brings tears of joy to my eyes. At other times, He fills me with compassion for the poor and hurting. There are times when trying to live by faith drives me batty. And there have even been times when I have been silly – because I enjoy the life that God has given me.
- a pastor. I have served the Bethel congregation since 2001. While it may seem to be counter-intuitive, I love to preach the Truth and raise questions in people’s minds. There is a lot that we can know about God. The Bible and God’s Creation are full of knowledge. There is also an awful lot that we don’t know about God and about life in general. I think joy is found in discovering God – discovering who He is and discovering what a relationship with Him is all about. As the Westminster Shorter Catechism states, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.”
- a runner. Over the last couple of years, I have started to truly enjoy long-distance running. I have completed 2 half-marathons and one marathon as well as a sprint-length triathlon. There is a lot to learn about the Christian life through physical exertion and pushing yourself to the limits. But the pursuit of godliness is far more profitable!
- a scientist. My undergraduate degree was in Biology and Chemistry as I prepared to go to medical school. As I like to see, “I was going to become a doctor…until I became a Christian.” Long story. At any rate, I like to learn – about creation, about thoughts that people are coming up with, about new inventions and new discoveries.
In my blog, you will probably get as many questions as you do answers. My hope is that through these random thoughts, strange observations and inquisitive musings, you will come to better know the God who created you and who desires to have you live in harmony with Him and with His will.
